Istanbul, 22-23rd of February 2010

Representatives of the Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina participated at the regional meeting on media responsibility in South East Europe that took place on 22-23rd of February 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey, in organization of the UNESCO.

The objective of this project was to encourage, assist and accelerate media reforms in the South-European countries. It aimed to consolidate internationally recognized standards in these states and bring about more media protection, professionalism, accountability and independence, through a self-regulation process initiated through strong network among the local press councils.

On behalf of the B&H Press Council, the Executive Director, Ms Ljiljana Zurovac, talked about the B&H Press Council, as the first self-regulatory body at the territory of South East Europe, and experiences in establishment and application of self-regulation in print media. 

Apart form B&H experience, the participants had an opportunity to hear more about media accountability systems in Denmark, Netherlands, Turkey, Albania, Estonia, and South Africa, which are different in many elements, but all have self-regulation as the basis of the media system. 

At this meeting also participated colleagues journalists, representatives of press councils and journalistic associations from Croatia, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo, South Africa, Hungary, Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia, Bulgaria, France and Turkey.
