WINTER MEDIA SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS OF JOURNALISM FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Mostar, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Tuzla

Sarajevo, 14-19 December 2009 - hotel Europa

The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina held fourth Winter School for students of journalism for 38 students from four faculties of journalism from Mostar, Tuzla, Sarajevo and Banja Luka. The School of Journalism was held in Sarajevo, hotel „Europa“, in period from 14th till 19th of December 2009.

Apart from possibility to socialize with colleagues from different faculties from Bosnia and Herzegovina, students had an opportunity to gain knowledge on ethics and professional standards of journalism through media self-regulation in B&H and Europe, also on freedom of editorial policy and responsibility of journalistic reporting. Students were enabled to learn more about relation of journalism and new media. Lecturing on treatment of gender issues and usage of gender sensitive language in media, as well as reporting from courts in B&H, was also part of the agenda. Through interesting lectures of domestic and foreign lecturers, especially through practical examples of application of journalistic ethics, based on work of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in B&H, students had a chance to apply their knowledge on media self-regulation at concrete examples from journalistic practice. Most of students agreed that practical examples were the best way of learning since that clearly shows what professional scruples they might expect in future work.

Lecturers at the School of journalistic ethics were journalists and experts on self-regulation from B&H and Europe: Ms Vildana Selimbegovic, Editor in Chief of daily „Oslobodjenje“, Mr Filip Voets, Ombudsman for media and Secretary General of the Flemish Press Council of Belgium, Mr Manfred Protze, journalists of „dpa“ agency and Spokesperson of the Press Council of Germany, Mr Mehmed Halilovic, Ombudsman for media of FB&H and Mr Fuad Kovacevic, journalist of daily „Oslobodjenje“ and member of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in B&H.

Interesting lecture on court media reporting and reporting on gender issues had Ms Merima Husejnovic, reporter from B&H Court of BIRN agency, Ms Ljiljana Zurovac, Executive Director of the Press Council in B&H and Ms Nada Ler-Sofronic, Director of the center „Woman and Society“.
