Complaints Procedure of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH

 

 

The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully realized the Info meeting on the topic “The Complaints Procedure of the Press Council in BiH” and “The Complaints Procedure of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH”. The events took place in Bihac on the 31st of October and in Banja Luka on the 1st of November 2013. They were organized as part of the Council of Europe project “Promotion of Professionalism and Tolerance in the Media in Bosnia and Herzegovina.” The Info Meetings in Bihac and Banja Luka gathered representatives of the non-government sector, citizens’ associations, media representatives, young human rights activists, and college and high school students.  

 

How to complain to untrue, manipulative and unprofessional reporting of the press and online media; how, through submitting complaints about breaches of the Press Code of BiH, the citizens can fight for their right to truthful  information and the media are protected from court suits for defamation; what do the provisions of the Code on Audiovisual Services and Media Radio Services of the Communications Regulatory Agency foresee; why and to what extant is hate speech in the media dangerous and how to fight it - were the key questions and topics on which participants of the info meetings gained information and which were discussed.  

 

The topics of media self-regulation and regulation in BiH, the Complaints Procedure of the Press Council in BiH and the Communications Regulatory Agency, the Press Code of BiH, the Code on Audiovisual Media Services and Radio Media Services, hate speech as the abuse of the freedom of speech  and European standards of freedom of speech, were covered by Ms. Ljiljana Zurovac, Executive Director of the Press Council in BiH, Ms. Maida Bahto Kestendzic, Project Assistant for Complaints of the Press Council in BiH, Ms. Azra Maslo, Complaints Officer of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH, Mr. Enes Osmancevic, Professor of the Faculty of Philosophy of Tuzla and Member of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BiH and Mr. Miodrag Zivanovic, Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka and Chair of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BIH.  

 

The goal of the meetings held in Bihac and Banja Luka was to inform the public about the citizens’ right to truthful information and the right to submit complaints to unprofessional media reporting, as well as professional standards of media coverage in BiH.
