BiH 2012 PROGRESS REPORT

The Press Council in BiH contributed to media professionalisation

Section 2.2. Human rights and protection of minorities, part Civil and political rights, page 17

The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina got positive remarks in the European Commission’s Report on the progress of BiH towards European Union.

“The Press Council has continued to work closely with judicial institutions and journalists’ associations to improve the quality of reporting and raise awareness among citizens of their legal rights. It has contributed to enforcing professional standards and improving the quality of the media by involving citizens in providing feedback on media practices“, states Section 2.2 Human rights and protection of minorities, part Civil and political rights.

The Report also states that the State and the Entity Constitutions provide for the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of thought, conscience and religion, but that intimidation and threats against journalists continue. European Commission expressed concern over political pressure on the media and polarization of the media along political and ethnic lines.

Positive remark on the Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only positive remark in this part of the European Commission’s Bosnia and Herzegovina 2012 Progress Report.

The Report, presented on the 10th of October 2012, can be read here.
