The Complaints Procedure of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH


The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully realized the Info Meeting on the topics “The Complaints Procedure of the Press Council in BiH” and “The Complaints Procedure of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH”. The event was held in Mostar on November 29th 2013, organized as part of the Council of Europe Project “Promotion of Professionalism and Tolerance in the Media in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. The Info Meeting in Mostar gathered representatives of the non-government sector, members of youth associations, students, and representatives of the media, academic community and local politicians, as well as members of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BiH.

 

 

How to submit a complaint to false, manipulative and unprofessional press and online media coverage; how due the citizens, by sending complaints due to breaches of the Press Code of BiH, fight for their right to true information, while protecting the media from defamation law suits; what due the provisions of the Code on Audiovisual Media Services and Radio Media Services of the Communications Regulatory Agency stipulate; why and to what extent is hate speech in media dangerous and how to fight against it - where some of the key questions and topics discussed by the participants of the Info Meeting.

 

 

The topics of media self-regulation and regulation in BiH, the Complaints Procedure of the Press Council in BiH and the Communications Regulatory Agency, the Press Code of BiH, the Code on Audiovisual Media Services and Radio Media Services, hate speech as the abuse of the freedom of speech  and European standards of freedom of speech, were covered by Ms. Ljiljana Zurovac, Executive Director of the Press Council in BiH, Ms. Maida Bahto Kestendzic, Project Assistant for Complaints of the Press Council in BiH, Ms. Azra Maslo, Complaints Officer of the Communications Regulatory Agency of BiH and Ms. Nada Dalipagic, Attorney and Member of the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BIH.  

 

The goal of the Info Meeting held in Mostar was to inform the public about the citizens’ right to truthful information and the right to submit complaints to unprofessional media reporting, strengthen professional standards of media coverage in BiH, as well as to point to the dangers of hate speech in public communication and the mechanisms of fighting such abuses of the freedom of speech and expression.
